Where four minutes of admin per consult really goes

A simple model of how small admin tasks add up across a veterinary practice, and where to win the time back.

Four minutes doesn’t sound like much. Spread across every consult, every vet and every working day, it adds up to weeks of clinical time a year. Here’s the arithmetic, and where the minutes hide.

The model

Take a vet seeing 18 consults a day, with 4 minutes of admin each. That is 1 hour 12 minutes a day. Over 5 days a week and 46 working weeks, it comes to 276 hours a year: about six working weeks per vet. In a three-vet practice, at a vet cost of around R290 an hour, that is roughly R240 000 a year. This is a model, not a measurement, but most practices recognise the shape of it.

Where the minutes go

Typing up clinical notes after the consult. Looking up a history in one screen and the account in another. Re-keying charges that were already discussed in the room. Chasing stock that was used but not recorded. Balancing the day-end by hand.

Where to win them back

Capture charges at the point of care, so billing follows the clinical record. Keep records, stock and billing in one system, so nothing is typed twice. Use templates for the notes you write every day. Give reception and vets the same view of the client, on any device.

Our goal

We build Microvet and pod.vet to bring that number to zero, so the time goes back to the consult room. Talk to us about where your team’s minutes go.
