The name
Named for an animal
Otomys is Africa’s indigenous big-eared mouse. The name joins the Greek oto, ear, and mys, mouse. We chose it because the ears are the point. Good practice software starts with hearing what the practice actually needs.
Since 1990, Otomys has built the practice and business software that South African veterinary teams run on. Today more than 200 practices across the country run on it. It was built by a vet, for vets, and we keep improving it by listening to the people who use it every day.
Our story
The name
Otomys is Africa’s indigenous big-eared mouse. The name joins the Greek oto, ear, and mys, mouse. We chose it because the ears are the point. Good practice software starts with hearing what the practice actually needs.
The maker
Dr Hendrik de Swardt wrote the first version in 1990 for his own veterinary practice in Pretoria, and he still uses it himself. Over more than 35 years it has grown from small-animal practices to wildlife and large-animal vets, equine practices, animal welfare organisations, kennels, grooming parlours and breeders.
The link
A mouse is how a person talks to a computer. That is our job too: to be the link between a busy veterinary team and the systems it relies on, so the technology fits the practice and not the other way round.
Treat the animal. Leave the admin to us.
One house, two products
Our vision
Our goal is to bring that number to zero.
Every minute a vet spends typing notes, chasing stock or balancing the day-end is a minute taken from an animal. That is why we build software around how South African practices actually work: through loadshedding, on farm visits, in English and Afrikaans, with small teams at month-end. When the admin takes care of itself, the time goes back to the consult room.
